"Global Day for Darfur"

We hope you'll join Human Rights First at events marking the global day for Darfur on Sunday, September 17. Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, actor George Clooney, Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel, Nobel Peace prize recipient Bishop Desmond Tutu, and former head of UN Peacekeeping troops in Rwanda Senator Romeo Dallaire are all supporting the global day for Darfur.

Here in New York, the Save Darfur Coalition is hosting a concert and rally in the East Meadow of Central Park. To find out more about the NY event look at their flyer: http://www.savedarfur.org/flyer.pdf or go to http://www.savedarfur.org for information for all events being held in the US. The current line-up for the NY rally includes former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Olympic Speed-skater Joey Cheek and musical acts Suzanne Vega, OAR and Lupe Fiasco.

We'd love for you to join us there -- Human Rights First will be based just behind and to the left of the elevated press risers when looking at the stage.

Human Rights First had the original idea for the Global Day for Darfur, and our friends and allies around the world took up the call. What started as three events has grown to more than 50 in 38 countries. There will be rallies, vigils, film-screenings, seminars and concerts this Sunday all across Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Europe and North America. See the website at www.dayfordarfur.org for more information about the international events.

On Sunday September 17, Please wear a blue hat, the internationally recognized icon of UN peacekeeping forces, to send a message to your government to pressure the U.N. Security Council and the government of Sudan to deploy U.N. troops to protect the people of Darfur. While there may be some blue hats available to purchase at some of the events, we’re urging you to wear any blue hat you might have.

While in Toronto, Kerry read the book Diet for a New America. That prompted her to become a vegetarian. That book also gave her "too many reasons to mention, from health to saving the environment."

From there, Kerry started getting involved in wellness and how the environment greatly affects people's health. For example, the book A Delicate Balance; The Causes and Prevention of Breast Cancer is very interesting. It links pollution in the environment to the increase of breast cancer, and other diseases.

Kerry would like to use this forum to ask others to help reverse the causes of pollution. If anyone would like to help improve the quality of the air and water, we are going to post letters in this section you can e-mail or send to congress regarding new bills. Also, you can check out the websites Working for a Change and Sierra Club for the most current information.

If anyone has any other causes they would like us to help with, send us an e-mail and we will post it here so that others can help. And if anyone has any information on the environment that they would like to share please let us know. There are a lot of issues going on in the world and it is hard for any one person to know about it all. Together, we can do our part.

We will also post the books Kerry is reading, and if you have any recommendations, let us know!

Thank you!
